Do You Have a “Supplement Habit?”

I’ve been thinking about this one for a long time. It’s time to speak up about it: Dietary supplements are being misused–big time. Yes, I said it.

Supplements are a huge money maker for many in the health and fitness world. It’s a golden goose for them. In effect, they are “supplement pushers.” And they may have talked you into a “supplement habit.”

Go to some of the top sites of large companies or health and fitness gurus, and you’ll see that they advertise supplements for just about every complaint under the sun, or for any attribute you may seek.

Do I think those who sell myriads of supplements are bad people? I believe many are well-meaning and certainly do some good, but fear and the quest for the dollar are strong pulls–our minds can easily convince us we’re doing the right thing.

What About FOOD?

I have a really simple question: What happened to eating FOOD?

Now the supplement people will immediately yell that our food supply has been stripped of its nutritional value. That our soils have been de-mineralized, our water made impure, our grains grown improperly, our meats chemically laden and filled with various poisons.

Much of this appears to be the case, no argument from me on that.

But does that mean that we should give up on food? Of course not!

We need to fight to re-mineralize our soils, purify our water, grow our grains properly, and get the poison out of our meats. But we should not–can not–abandon our food and REPLACE it with supplements!

It’s pretty obvious to me that we’re meant to get our nutrients primarily from  FOOD, not through supplements… Hence the word, Supplement! (Something that completes or makes an addition)

Do you really think our Creator wants us to live on supplements, instead of the brilliantly designed food He’s provided?

The “Good Diet” Test

I’ve often said that the true mark of a good diet is one that relies primarily on real food. If you are on a diet that cannot be healthily sustained without ingesting copious amounts of supplements, then I would question that diet. In fact, I’d call it a “fake diet.” Now if you have a medical condition that REQUIRES you to do this, then I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the average person who has been scared by the supplement industry into acquiring a “supplement habit” of sometimes hundreds of dollars per month!

Now I’ve been the victim of the scare tactics myself, for many years. I’ve tried nearly every supplement under the sun at one time or another. And the supplement ended up becoming the primary food more often than not. In fact, I avoided many nutritious foods, because I knew I could “go around them” by taking a supplement.

Today, at 57, I’ve broken the “habit.” I strive to get as many of my nutrients as possible through actual food. I use carefully chosen wild greens in my smoothies, and am expanding my repertoire of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I intend to go deeper into sprouts, which offer a whole new world of superior nutrition.

I’m eating less animal food than I was, but when I do I eat eggs from “free range” chickens and reduce my exposure to “conventionally raised” meat.

To make sure I’m getting the nutrients I need, I track my eating for periods of time with an app. I really like “Cronometer,” because it not only tracks calories and macro percentages (protein, carbs, and fat), it also tracks vitamin, mineral and other nutrients in food. I encourage my personal training / lifestyle coaching clients to use it too, and I help them balance their diets to ensure optimal health and fitness.

When in doubt I go with the natural way–the way we were designed to live. I  believe we were created to live as naturally as possible, and in so many ways, we have strayed off course.

But I can also sense a desire to return to the natural way in so many of my clients and in many of the people I come across. The natural way is simple, healthful, inexpensive, easy, and just makes sense! I hope you give it serious consideration.
