This morning I was looking at one of my training books, as I am want to do before my workout. Just looking for ideas, and thought stimulation. The book is Garage Gym Athlete by Jerrod Moon, and it’s a great one, by the way. I highly recommend it. You can pick it up for just $2.99 at Amazon (and I’m not getting any affiliate cut on this one).
If you’re the kind of person who loves programs and are into a CrossFit-type of training (particularly with barbells) , then Jerrod is your guy. He’s ex-miliary, lives and breathes programs, and is a living testament to their efficacy.
But I had kind of an epiphany this morning once I started my workout and intended to put some of Jerrod’s ideas to work: I AM NOT A PROGRAM GUY!
Not only am I not a program guy, I don’t see myself ever becoming one. And this is not a knock in any way on programs or “program people.” I have much respect for them and their work speaks for itself.
So if I’m not a program guy, what exactly am I?
I’m a “Playa”!
That’s right, I like to play!
Does that mean I don’t want or get results? No, I must be doing something right. I’m 57 now and in better physical condition than I was in 20 years ago. I do progressive calisthenics, yoga, and lift weights (barbell and kettlebells).
I’m continuing to get stronger, with better mobility and balance.
So I’m not exactly slacking!
But I’m a bit free form in my workouts. I like to play… test… experiment… and most of all–enjoy what I’m doing!
I work out 5-6 days a week. And I’ve been doing this for years. Why? Yes, it’s good for my health, but it’s also a form of therapy, for lack of a better word. It’s the same reason I used to shoot baskets for hours growing up–it had therapeutic value to me.
In other words, training is my hobby.
Do you think I’d be doing this just about every morning if I hated it?
So I have no doubt that this “playing” that I’m doing has vastly increased my longevity in this fitness world, because it’s never been work for me.
There’s a saying that if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life, and that’s me with fitness.
So what’s the takeaway for you?
To find your path in fitness. It may be a lot of regimentation–a strict program–and that is totally okay. I know people who love this.
Or you may be more of a “playa,” like me. I’m resigned to the fact that that’s what I am–I just want to be a good/very good/excellent “playa”!
By the way, being a “playa” doesn’t mean you don’t play hard–when you have a goal you’re going to “play hard toward that goal”! It might even be a bit unpleasant sometimes. But overall you’ll enjoy the experience and the results you’ll get.
So if you’re looking for a super-regimented workout and nutrition plan, I’m NOT your guy!
But if you want to “play” your way to better health and fitness–and make it a LIFETIME journey, then I just may be your guy. Contact us and find out. It won’t cost you a thing, nor is there any risk to getting a Consultation with us. If it makes sense to you, then you’ll move forward if the time is right. If not, no loss. But if you want to move forward in life, you need to step out a bit.
Summer’s on the way. Come on–let’s at least look good in our swimwear!
Give us a try. You have nothing to lose except perhaps a good amount of weight and fat–and perhaps your “work” ethic. But you may just want to replace it with a “play” ethic!
