The Gym is a Candy Store

I have early memories of my dad taking me to the local YMCA. I remember playing in the gym, and seeing the gymnastics bars and mats, and the weight room, and the pool. Good memories.

Even as I got much older, I’ve always found it thrilling to go to the gym!

Now, I love to work out in different settings–outdoors as I mentioned in my previous post, in a garage or basement. But I have to admit my favorite place to train is in a gym–nothing fancy, but it’s gotta have barbells! Dumbells are good too, and Kettlebells are great. But there’s something about barbells!

I like to keep in mind the simple things, and the simple reasons to work out. I know everyone has goals–they want to lose weight, gain muscle, get healthy, etc. All worthy goals. But my main drive for working out, has always been because I’ve enjoyed it!

I know not everyone is the same as me, but for all my clients, I strive to give them a piece of that joy I get from going to the gym and pushing the weights around.

Yes, to me, the gym is a candy store. Merry Christmas, everyone. Let’s go get some candy!

I’m Not a BodyBuilder, I’m a Full-Body Builder

Training this am in the cold but sunny, beautiful outdoors. Training full-body movements–with Kettlebells, Equalizer bars, and bodyweight.

In defining what I do, I would say that my interest is training the whole body, as much as possible, as a unit, for the purpose of health, aesthetics, and hate to use this overused word, but “functional” fitness.

Full-body training has a lot of advantages:

    1. The movements are more natural, and therefore tend to be somewhat easier on the joints than isolated movements.
    2. More efficient, quicker training.
    3. Proportional development is simplified.
    4. Fully body work brings in a cardio element, for those–like me–who hate long, boring cardio training.
    5. The central nervous system gets a great workout.
    6. Training outdoors (when possible) offers obvious benefits, such as sun and fresh air. It also tends to foster increased creativity in finding new, improved ways to train. Which brings me to #7…
    7. FUN. Creativity is fun. Enough said.

Legends from the Golden Age–And Beyond

There was once a time before steroids and other performance enhancers took over the world of professional bodybuilding. There was a time when men (and a few women at the time) used nothing but hard, scientific training, rest, and good nutrition to create amazing, muscular, athletic, proportional bodies.

From the time of the ancient Greek and Roman warriors, through the golden age of bodybuilding in the 1940’s and 50’s, this is how it was done. Check out the classic physiques, from the sculpture of Lacoon and Hercules, to Eugene Sandow, John Grimek, Vince Gironda, and the immortal Steve Reeves.

There is a resurgence of natural, full-body body sculpting, guided by cutting edge science. For men and for women. Here’s a nice article sums up a much healthier vision for women and weight training than what is so often pushed in bodybuilding circles: Redefining the Female Bodybuilder.

GREEK PHYSIQUE™ FITNESS is proud to be part of the resurgence back to the natural, to the proportional, and to common sense.
