What is “GREEK”? It’s Appearance AND Function!

Why do we have to settle for attaining JUST a better

appearance, or JUST better function through our workouts? Why can’t we have both?

This is not a new idea. My inspiration for GREEK PHYSIQUE™ is the ancient Spartans. They were famous for their amazing appearance AND function. Think about it–they didn’t go down in history for having great abs–they became famous for what they could DO with their minds and bodies.

Do you really want to do endless curls which basically just develop your biceps muscles? Wouldn’t you rather do functional exercises that develop multiple muscles AND the biceps, while having fun doing it?

Now I’m not talking about bodybuilding. I think bodybuilding is great, but unless you’re a pro, or really into it, I would rather build the body AND improve my ability to fully (or as full as one can) take part in life’s activities.

And there’s so little downside to training for appearance AND function. You lose very little on the appearance side. In fact, it can be argued that you actually GAIN improved appearance, because functional workouts provide a very nice natural balance to your body.

My older clients particularly appreciate functional movement in their workouts, because this is what they need to fight the ravages of aging. When they lose function, in many ways they lose their life. They certainly lose their independence.

So let’s bring some real function–and fun–into the world of physical training. I think you’ll find it much more fulfilling than just another set of bicep curls (yawn).

You Won’t Believe What These P.E. Students Could Do!

I’m so excited for you to see the incredible level of physical fitness demonstrated in this video (these are high school students!), and yet, I’m also saddened by how far the state of physical education in our schools has fallen.

President John F. Kennedy took La Sierra High School in Carmichael, California, and made it the “poster child” of his commitment to make America a healthy place.

As said in the video, “President Kennedy knew that if America was physically healthy, it would be mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and patriotically healthy.”

The President was never able to see his vision to fruition, but perhaps the new Administration will see the value in leading a new generation of Americans (and especially their parents) to get beyond “participation trophies” and become their absolute best.

I know the producers of the video have an IndieGoGo crowdfunding page, and are raising money to make a film about the La Sierra High School program. I’m not associated with them, but I encourage you to to go here to find out more about what they’re doing.

I’m 100% behind the desire to get our young people fully functional, and ready for the challenges they–and we as a nation–are facing and will face.

I hope you are too.

We’ve heard a lot about “making America great again.” I’m all for that. Let’s start in the schools.

When to Use Weight Machines

Everything has its place and time in the world of fitness… Okay, maybe not everything 🙂

But many things do.

Weight machines are a great example of that. Let me list a few good purposes:

  1. They’re a great starting place for someone who is new to working out or coming back from a layoff.
  2. They safely assess strength.
  3. They’re safe to use for elderly and those rehabbing from injuries.
  4. They’re great for circuit training (going from one exercise to another without rest).
  5. They’re also great for quickly adding or removing weight plates for those who like to “pyramid” or perform other weight adding or taking away schemes.

While personal training, I often start new clients with weight machines. If their ability allows, I will typically move them past the machines into cables, free weights, kettlebells, and (my favorite!) bodyweight training.

The reason I move through this progression is to show the trainee the means to bring more functionality, real-world strength, flexibility, and balance into their workouts. Not to mention variety (the spice of training!), creativity and just plain ole fun!

Weight machines don’t get respect in some circles, but they have a time and place, and provide specific advantages in that time and place.

So don’t dis the machines!

The Forgotten Step To Successful Injury Recovery

One of the main reasons I became a Certified Personal Trainer was to pass on all I learned from the many injuries and surgeries I had to recover from.

I learned because I wanted my body to function again.

I wanted to work out again.

I wanted to play sports again.

I wanted my freedom of movement back!

And thinking back to how I was able to get the body working again–in addition to the God-given healing that came naturally with time–it usually came down to, yes, initial rest, but not resting too long.

Rest alone, I found, healed, but if the joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles didn’t start moving again, then weaknesses and imbalances came, and with them poor function.

So the formula for me has typically been rest, and then at the proper time, movement, starting slowly and light, and working my way up patiently from there. That’s pretty much the center of physical therapy, isn’t it?

And having a physical therapy mindset is really helpful. Because many fitness enthusiasts get an injury, and don’t allow it proper rest, or if they do, they either rest it too long without eventually including movement, or they jump back into heavy weight lifting too quick.

There is immense value in exercising just hard enough to pump the joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles with fresh blood, and therefore OXYGEN. This is the forgotten step, and one that has a major effect on recovery.

So when you’re good and ready, let’s get up and get that blood pumpin’!

Our Goal for This Year: A Greek Physique–For Everyone!

Nobody can or should be everything to all people. We all have unique gifts, thank God. bodyweight on beach

GREEK PHYSIQUE™, LLC is no different. Our focus is this: To provide our clients with functional and efficient body sculpting.

We plan to concentrate much of our energy into providing progressive bodyweight training that focuses on improving joint function and key areas such as the back and shoulders. Training that is accessible for anyone–from those with joint challenges to those who just want to explore what their body is capable of.

In short, we’re encouraging our clients to get back to the basics of what true health and fitness are. The principles of what creates a functional, fit body have been with us since the days of the Spartans. We just have technology and science to help us easier achieve these principles.

The downside to technology is that it too often gets in the way of creating a functional, fit body. It tends to create complexity, when what we want is simplicity.

So let’s get to the business of helping everyone achieve a Greek Physique!
